Director
Spike Jonze
Adam Spiegel
Spike Jonze is the blueprint. He came out of BMX and skate photography — magazine work, then Blind's 'Video Days' — and brought that camera to music video: close, physical, unglamorous, in on the joke.
His 1990s run rewrote the form's vocabulary. 'Buddy Holly' composites Weezer into Happy Days so convincingly it plays as archive. 'Sabotage' is a complete fake 70s cop show in three minutes. 'Praise You' is a guerrilla dance troupe ambushing a cinema forecourt on a camcorder. 'Weapon of Choice' is simply Christopher Walken, alone in a hotel lobby, flying.
The insight underneath all of it: one idea, executed for real, beats any amount of spectacle. He carried it into features and won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Her.
