The Childish Gambino collaboration is the spine of it — 'Sweatpants', '3005', and then 'This Is America', four unbroken minutes in a warehouse where the camera stays locked on Donald Glover's body while catastrophe accumulates in the background. It won the Grammy for Best Music Video and the VMA for Best Direction, and it works precisely because Murai refuses to cut to what you want to look at.
The same restraint runs through 'Never Catch Me', where Flying Lotus and Kendrick Lamar's children dance out of their own funeral, and through his television — Atlanta, Station Eleven, Barry — where dread is a matter of framing rather than incident.
