CANADA are a Barcelona collective — Nicolás Méndez and Lope Serrano directing, Alba Barneda and Oscar Romagosa producing — who built the most sensuous visual language in contemporary music video out of deliberately old tools: zooms, split screens, film grain, optical tricks that look like they were found rather than rendered.
'Bombay' for El Guincho announced it in 2010. 'The Less I Know the Better' gave Tame Impala a gorilla, a basketball court and a broken heart, and took a VMA nomination for Best Direction. Then came Rosalía: 'Malamente' and 'Pienso en tu mirá' turned flamenco iconography into something genuinely new, and 'TKN' with Travis Scott won the Latin Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video.
They work now as a full production company across London and Los Angeles, but the sensibility has not diluted — every frame still looks handmade and a little bit hallucinated.
